LABOUR LAW FOR TRADE UNIONS 2012

The Professional Development Project of the Faculty of Law, UCT, is pleased to offer a three day course on Labour Law for Trade Unions.

Course dates: 6 - 8 March 2012

Fulfilling the role of an elected trade union official requires skill and wisdom. The trade union official is required to act in the best interests of his/her trade union and its members, but at the same time ensure that he/she fulfils his/her duty of good faith towards the employer. Both parties are dependent on this employment environment. It is for this reason that the training and development of trade union officials must focus on the various elements that control and direct the employment environment.

Who should attend? All union executive members and new trade union officials.

Course presenter Andrew Breetzke, a frequent contract lecturer for the Faculty of Law, has been lecturing and training on labour relations for 16 years. He has presented training for DITSELA, as well as specific trade unions and trained and lectured for management and corporates. He has a clear understanding of the expectations and concerns in dealing with trade unions.

A FRAUD EXAMINATION COURSE - Preparation for the International CFE Examination 2012

The Professional Development Project of the Faculty of Law, UCT, is pleased to offer a series of 4 modules to assist in the preparation for the International CFE Examination.

The Certified Fraud Examiners (CFE) International is a globally preferred credential, necessary if you want to advance your career and to position yourself as an expert in the fraud examiners profession . This course is a definite preparation course for the international CFE exam to become a CFE (CERTIFIED FRAUD EXAMINER).

Course dates:
Module 1 & 2: 12 – 16 March 2012
Module 3 & 4: 26 – 30 March 2012
Repeat course:
Module 1 & 2: 13 – 17 August 2012
Module 3 & 4: 27 - 31 August 2012

Course Fee: R15 000 per delegate, which includes registration fee for membership of the ACFE International chapter, registration fee for the exam, the ACFE manual, exam facilitation, lunches, teas and parking for the period of the contact session.

Who should attend?
Anyone who intends writing the International CFE exam, external and internal and forensic auditors, fraud examiners and specialised investigators in income tax, customs and excise as well as members of the South African Police Service, the National Prosecuting Authority and the financial services industry, financial managers and risk managers.

Course presenters
Ansie de Jager is a Certified Fraud Examiner who has more than 18 years’ experience in the detection and investigation of fraud and white collar crimes. She is a practicing attorney, has experience as Head of Internal Audit, Legal Advisor, Claims, Litigation and Compliance Management in various companies and institutions. Ansie provides regular paralegal training on various legal subjects. Ansie is also a registered Moderator and Assessor.

COMPLIANCE MANAGEMENT 2012

in conjunction with The Compliance Institute of South Africa

The course, offered by distance learning, combined with a three-day compulsory practical session, will introduce students to the main aspects and objectives of the Compliance function.

Duration: April to December 2012, with a compulsory contact session in Cape Town in July 2012
Course Fee: R7 750 per person (excl VAT) for members of the Compliance Institute of South Africa; R9 500 per person (excl VAT) for non-members.

FORENSIC INVESTIGATION 2012

The Professional Development Project of the Faculty of Law, UCT, is pleased to offer a five day course on Forensic Investigation.

The aim of this course is to give a general introduction to the field of forensic investigations in local crime and particularly dealing with commercial crimes against business (fraud, theft, corruption, irregularities, cybercrimes, computer crimes, money laundering and other economic failures). This course will present a multidisciplinary and interactive educational opportunity for learning about best practice in the forensic investigation arena, taking into consideration forensic implications on the street, in the corporate setting and in the courtroom. Each day would be a structured combination of lectures, exercises, facilitative group work, workshopping, discussion, provision of practical examples and engagement, ensuring an outcomes based learning module.

Who should attend?
Crime prevention specialists, legal officers, law enforcement officers, forensic practitioners and academic researchers and instructors, risk managers, fraud reporting officers, fraud examiners, ethics and compliance officers, public and private crime investigators, private forensic auditing companies as well as local authorities and metropolitan police services and private in-house investigators. Deolinda Delcarme is a trained legal professional with 18 years appropriate experience in the law, risk management, training, facilitation and presentation skills. She is a member of the International Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and has been running her own consultancy since 2009.

GOVERNMENT CONTRACTS AND PROCUREMENT LAW 2012

The aim of this three day course is to cover the important aspects of public procurement, explain the relevant procurement law and what has been achieved in regards to procurement policy, procedures and best practice.

Advocates and attorneys, legal advisors, legal practitioners, government officials, anyone who has an interest in government procurement.

Course presenters
Phoebe Bolton is a professor in Public Law at the University of Stellenbosch. She is the author of a number of publications in the area of government contracts and government procurement and the recipient of numerous academic awards. Funding from the National Research Foundation is currently enabling her to continue her research in the area of public procurement regulation.
Geo Quinot is a professor in Public Law at the University of Stellenbosch. His research focuses on general administrative law, including a particular focus on the regulation of state commercial activity. He is the author of various articles in academic journals and electronic publications as well as two recent books. He is currently involved in a British Academy funded project on public procurement regulation in Southern Africa as lead African partner in partnership with the Public Procurement Research Group at the University of Nottingham.

INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY LAW 2012

The Professional Development Project of the Faculty of Law, UCT, in conjunction with the Anton Mostert Chair of Intellectual Property Law at the University of Stellenbosch, is pleased to present a three day course on Intellectual Property Law.

Innovation is crucial to economic growth. Intellectual property rights are a key driver of innovation and progress by providing incentives and protection to encourage creativity and technological advancement. A sound understanding of what intellectual property rights are and how they can be harnessed and protected is essential in today’s knowledge economy.

The course will include both theoretical and practical aspects of the laws relating to copyright, trademarks, patents and designs. It is designed for laypersons and lawyers not familiar with Intellectual Property Law, but who wish to acquire a basic working knowledge of the field. It will be facilitated by the faculties of both universities and leading practitioners in the field. This is essential learning for anyone who works with, or whose livelihood is dependent upon, intellectual property.

Lee-Ann Tong is a senior lecturer in the Department of Private Law, UCT, who is a specialist in the field of intellectual property law.
Owen Dean Professor and incumbent of the Anton Mostert Chair of Intellectual Property Law at Stellenbosch University. Owen is a practising attorney and consultant to Spoor & Fisher, specialist intellectual property attorneys and author of “Handbook of South African Copyright Law”.

MUSLIM PERSONAL LAW 2012

The Professional Development Project of the Faculty of Law, UCT, is pleased to offer a three day course in Muslim Personal Law.

The course is designed to provide an overview of Muslim personal law in South Africa.

This is an introductory course to Muslim personal law and its significance within South Africa law. The course addresses the following: foundations of Islamic Law as it related to Muslim family law and Muslim law of succession; features of Muslim personal law; judicial and legislative approaches to Muslim personal law; options for the recognition of Muslim personal law and their human rights implications; and various case studies of Muslim personal law that practitioners encounter or might encounter in daily practice.

Course dates: 1 –3 August 2012

Course fee: R 6 000 per delegate. The course fee includes refreshments, lunches and parking.

Who should attend?
Legal practitioners and individuals, with a legal background and an interest in Muslim personal law.

Course presenter
Dr Waheeda Amien holds a Doctorate in Law from the University of Ghent (Belgium). She is an attorney of the High Court of South Africa. She worked as a researcher for a number of institutions including the South African Parliament’s then Welfare and Population Development Portfolio Committee; Law Race, and Gender Research Unit (UCT); and Conflicts in Human Rights Project at the Human Rights Centre (University of Ghent). Dr Amien teaches in the Departments of Commercial Law, Public Law and Private Law at UCT. Her research areas of specialisation are family law (particularly Muslim personal law) and human rights.
