The School for Advanced Legal Studies (SALS) invites you to further your law studies at the University of Cape Town while surrounded by breathtaking scenery and a rich diversity of cultures, in one of the most beautiful cities in the world. SALS offers the LLM and MPhil degrees by coursework and minor dissertation, the Professional Masters degree by coursework and research tasks as well as the Postgraduate Diploma in Law.

Our internationally recognised programmes are taught by distinguished South African and international academics and practitioners, and attract many local and international students. The coursework programmes may be started in either February or July of each year, and as no correspondence courses are offered, candidates must be resident in Cape Town for the duration of the programme.

The Faculty has three departments offering postgraduate coursework:

General degrees are offered, as well as degrees in the following specialist areas:

  • Shipping Law
  • Tax Law

The Postgraduate Diploma in Law may be conferred without specialisation (General) or in any of the following specialist areas

  • Labour Law
  • Law, Criminology and Society
  • Marine and Environmental law (not offered in 2017)
  • Shipping Law
  • Tax Law
